The Humane Story of Jazz Music

the American Continents were first inhabited thousands of years ago by people from Central Europe who went past Mongolia and crossed the Beringia Land Bridge which later became Bering Strait between Asia and Alaska ; the people , called red-Indians , spread throughout the American Continents ;

Columbus discovered America as everyone knows but what is not equally well-known is that he paved the way for the discovery of a cultural landmark of the modern world -- Jazz music ; this is how it happened :

following the discovery of America by Columbus ( 1451 – 1506 ) , a lot of migration took place from Europe to America ; the enterprising Europeans who migrated to America had engaged in agriculture and needed a lot of farm labourers { dic_ labourer n person who labours esp someone doing manual work for wages } but they were too sophisticated for labour ; when Magellan ( 1480 – 1521 ) circumnavigated the Earth going around Africa , a new source of labour was found -- Africa ; and , the ruthless Europeans rounded-up Africans and by force , using fire-arms , transported them to the newly discovered American Continents and put them to forced labor in America ; poor Africans were hapless { dic_ hapless adj unlucky } victims of the process of expansion to the new world ; the native Americans , red-Indians , were too independent and fierce to be subjugated ; the red-Indians adapted { adapt v make or become suitable for a new use or purpose } to the use of fire-arms and became expert horse riders ( horses were not native to America : they were brought to America from Arabia by Europeans ) and defied the Europeans ; the unorganized native Africans brought to America were made slaves to the white land owners in America ; however the creative human spirit is not to be dominated ; we all know that slavery in US was abolished during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln ; the difficult situation of the blacks in America spurred { dic_ spur v encourage } the development of yet another creative black response -- American jazz music ; the jazz music is based on improvisation – like Indian music though the two schools of music are not historically related ; jazz music is noted for its rhythm and the use of syncopation -- { { dic_ syn.co.pa.tion n ( music ) a shifting of the normal accent , usually by stressing the normally unaccented beats } ; { dic_ syncopate v ( music ) stress the week beats in a rhythm instead of the strong ones ; syncopation n } } -- a shift in emphasis that doesn’t return to the original strong beat (.sum as it is called in Indian music ) unlike the thihayi in Indian music ; the situation the black jazz musicians depict is their own condition in life of having been displaced from their native land without any hope of returning to their motherland ;

Jazz Music

Excellent Article. What is the status of Jazz Music now?
It is worth to mention the words of Jazz music giant Louis Armstrong "Ah, swing, well, we used to call it syncopation, then they called it ragtime, then blues, then jazz. Now, it's swing. White folks - yo'all sho is a mess!"

Need some explanation on "thihayi in Indian music"

Rem : thihayi ;

thanks to sancochin@gmail.com ( G.Santosh Kumar , Computer Science , CUSAT ) we have an overview of Jazz to-day in a lighter vain ;

" thihayi " in Indian music is a temporary departure from the chosen rhythmic pattern to a new rhythmic pattern so that a repetition of the new pattern for three times brings the new rhythm back into confluence {{ dic_ confluence n place where two rivers join } { dic_ confluence n a flowing together of two or more streams }} with the originally chosen rhythm ; this is usually a moment of exhilaration { dic_ exhilarate v make lively and cheerful } and climax that even untutored feel in their bones so to speak ; when the famous Alla-Rakkha was to perform for the western audience in the UN some friend of his warned him the convention of the western audience is that no clapping is resorted to by the audience until the end of performance ; Alla-Rakkha returned ".convention or no convention they will clap " : and , sure enough they did clap at the moment of climax after which the music performance continued to proceed according to the Indian tradition ;

in the case of Jazz , the new rhythmic pattern is a permanent shift of emphasis and the new rhythm does not return to the original rhythm -- a situation which , i feel , depicts their own condition of permanent displacement from their motherland , a sorry story of the world history ;

information about Jazz music can be found through google search ; it is interesting to note Jazz originated around the turn of the twentieth century and spread through out the world ;

Rem : the status of American Indians to-day ;

the " humane story of Jazz music " describes one of the two aftermaths { dic_ aftermath n results of an event considered together } of the discovery of America -- the black or preferably " african-native " ( " negro " is out : it is an insult ) culture ; the other of the consequences of the discovery of America is the plight of the ( red-Indians ) American Indians ( the red-Indians are so called not because of their skin colour but because of their tradition of wearing a red ribbon on their heads when going to war ) ; they are essentially wiped out of the US.; However , by the grit and determination of the peace Nobel-laureate Rigoberta Menchu a red-Indian nation , Guatemala was formed -- an ennobling development ; it is interesting to note that Rigoberta Menchu used the innovative " human-trap " , a device that would trap the Spaniards and kill them if they attempted to violate the homes of red-Indians ; that was done to discourage the ruling Spaniards from going after the peace loving American Natives ( red-Indians of Guatemala ) ;

much of this story is related to the efforts of the Europeans to go after India -- though India itself is somewhat passive.; Q: what can we do for the world ? Q: how can we live up to the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi ?
